Today's Reading: 2 Sam. 3-5 and 1 Cor. 3
Something that really touched my heart in today's reading is how we see that every time part of Saul's household, or men die (even Abner who had spent most of his career trying to kill David), David weeps. He literally tears his clothes and weeps!
"And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier. And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept. And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool diet?" (2 Sam. 3:31-33)
Why is he weeping over his enemy's death? Why is he weeping over the demise of those who wished to do him heart?
Perhaps this is another reason why God calls David a man after His own heart... It seems that he genuinely felt sorrow and sadness over the death of his enemies, just as God feels sorrow over the death of the wicked. God too cries, "Why will ye die, O house of Israel?" (Ezekiel 18:31)
This should make us search our own hearts... do we gloat and rejoice when those that wish to do us wrong perish, or do we sorrow over the loss of a soul, over a human being that will never know the love and mercy of God that we know...?
