Should we forget the Law?

In today's emergent Christian culture there is a wide-spread tendency to do away with the "law." We've all heard it, "No longer under law, but under grace." In fact, I've seen many people use this very statement to justify breaking God's Law, because after all, "It doesn't apply to us anymore." Some of my friends call God's Law "legalism" and we all know that we are not saved by works but by grace. And so the "law," just like the baby, gets thrown out with bath water.

But the more I study into the Word, the more I see that God's Law is just as valid today as it ever was. It has not changed and IT is not the problem. The problem is us! You see, God's Law is like a mirror…it shows us how unChristlike, how unHoly we are. Keeping the Law cannot save us. In fact, it is impossible to be saved by striving to keep the Law. One of my favorite promises is:

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Eph. 2:8-9

However, if we do away with God's Law, His perfect standard of righteousness, we would cease to truly value the Cross. God is Holy, His Law is Holy…neither changes. His perfect justice and perfect righteousness must stand true, else He would not be God, because He would be denying His own unchanging character. (Mal. 3:6, Ex. 3:14, Heb. 13:8) However, in the Cross, the penalty for our breaking His perfect Law is vindicated in the death of His perfect Son, who stands in our un-perfect place. We are unrighteous, we have broken His Law. He is righteous, He perfectly kept and fulfilled the Law. He paid the price! And this victory He has given to each one of us!

Wow! Now that is goooooooood news!

However, the good news doesn't stop there… (To be continued tomorrow! :-)

Day 30 - Vit. B-3 Challenge
  • Bible Thought: The Law drives me to the Cross - where I find salvation!
  • Blessing: God is bringing healing to this household! PTL!
  • Battle: To not trust my own righteousness (which I always want to do), and instead to keep my trust in His righteousness.
